Committee for Education Funding Sends Letter to Department of Education Regarding Recent Actions

March 31, 2025

ICYMI: Last week, the Committee for Education Funding (CEF) to Education Secretary McMahon expressing opposition to the President’s executive order calling for the closure of the Department of Education (ED) and other recent Administration actions that have drastically cut ED staffing. These efforts could jeopardize ED’s ability to carry out its legally mandated responsibilities, including the administration of federal funding that Congress has lawfully enacted – funding that is vital to teaching and learning, to job creation, and to the nation’s future.

Withholding or cancelling education funding contradicts federal appropriations – legislation that Congress just extended through this fiscal year that included specific funding for education accounts and programs. This law reiterates Congress’ clear intent: agencies must adhere to the funding directives outlined in the legislation and may not reorganize, consolidate, or eliminate programs without Congressional approval. Any such changes must be proposed in the President’s budget and considered by the relevant Congressional committees.
